APEGA governs the engineering and geoscience professions under the Engineering and Geoscience Professions (EGP) Act. This Act grants APEGA its status as a self-governing body that sets the minimum standards and regulations for these professions.

As these professions have evolved, so have APEGA’s standards. Keeping pace with the newest advancements and discoveries has been crucial in ensuring Albertans’ safety. APEGA’s licensing requirements stay current with each profession’s new practices, technologies, and discoveries—ensuring membership standards remain relevant.

A significant revision to the Act has not been implemented in more than 40 years. APEGA worked closely with multiple stakeholders to discuss amendments to the Act, then submitted more than 160 recommendations to the Alberta government. It is expected that the legislation will be tabled for debate this coming fall.

Seeing the Act brought into the 21st century is a key priority and will ensure that world-class standards in practice and safety continue to remain a crucial part of both professions.
